Dave Portnoy. What a fuckin jew. Millionaire from muh sportsball.
A non-retard would hammer this nail while standing on the other side of the gate. It sounds counterintuitive, but you pull a hammer down on a nail, you don't push. Pretend the nail is a log you're trying to split, it's just horizontal.
I'm guessing he's trying to add finer slats to the gate, to keep critters out? I don't think that's gonna work well...
I agree that standing over the gate to do this would be a good idea, at least for nailing it in high. But he should be doing it on the other side of this gate because that crossbar means the slats won't be flat against it.
And funny you mentioned splitting logs, because those nails are going to split those thin slats. Need to use much finer nails or pre-drill. (And they're going to stick out the other side too.)
You start the nail on a solid surface first, after giving the tip a good whack to flatten it so it doesn't split that narrow board. Really, you don't even use a nail in this situation. This kid has no clue.

Yes, I wouldn't have thought to nail here. To me, it almost felt like a set up they did just to have a laugh at Portnoy's lack of know-how. Like, "Hey, just see if you can nail this to that fence."

That way you won't split the wood.

With a piece of wood that thin, the pilot hole is necessary to avoid any tearing or cracking.
