I ask the AI - was Islam seen as a form of Christianity

Initially, in the context of a largely Christian Middle East, Islam was viewed by some Christians as a heresy, specifically a "heresy of the Ishmaelites," as described by Saint John of Damascus. However, the majority of Christians view Islam as a false religion due to its rejection of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, and other core Christian beliefs.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Early Perceptions:

Islam emerged in a region where Christianity was dominant, and some Christians initially perceived it as a deviation from their faith, a Christological heresy.

Saint John of Damascus's View:

In his work "Concerning Heresy," Saint John of Damascus, a Syriac scholar, described Islam as the "heresy of the Ishmaelites".

Christological Differences:

The core difference lies in the Christian belief in the Trinity (God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and the divinity of Jesus Christ, which are rejected by Islam.

Islamic Beliefs:

Islam believes in one God (Allah) and that Jesus was a prophet, but not divine or the son of God.

Later Christian Views:

As Islam spread and became a significant force, Christian views became more polemical, with some depicting Muhammad as a false prophet, a servant of Satan, or even the Antichrist.

Modern Views:

In the modern period, after the decline of Islamic empires as a military threat to Europe, a more relaxed or benign view of Islam developed in some Christian circles.

Current Christian Views:

The majority of Christians still view Islam as a false religion because of its rejection of core Christian beliefs.

Atheists are curious specimens. They are as dogmatic as the most ardent believers and pat themselves on the back for knowing more when they know less. Given their dogmatism they inevitably know nothing about the occult or magic. Granted, Christians are just as bad there. But they at least are open to their validity in a sense. They just think they are evil or untouchable.
