And there were less retards on the road meaning driving was a joy instead of a chore.

[ - ] dassar 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 21:13:36 ago (+1/-0)

Although tbf, there was still a shit load of yearly fatalities, variously or mostly from DWI and speed/ inattention.
Here our number of deaths on the road have dropped significantly (dropped maybe 2-300 per year) from 30-40 ago when there was 2/3rds less population nationwide.

I drove from Tampa to Orlando to Viera recently.

😱 holy shit are drivers fucktarded.

It was definitely not relaxing I was done driving after 3hrs.

But no mention of single piston manual drum brakes...

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 3 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 15:22:09 ago (+3/-0)

Or manual gearbox...

[ - ] __47__ 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 15:52:54 ago (+1/-0)

Dude, getting a good manual these days is a nightmare. It's either 06 Mazdas with 300k miles or brand new Civic SIs for $55k.

[ - ] registered_bot 2 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 16:55:57 ago (+2/-0)

You can still get a decent manual pickup mazda or ford motha fucking ranger in 5 speed manual for 4-5 grand for a clean one. I've gotten a clean one for under a grand that was 5 speed 2wd shortbox single cab, the mini truck dream just a couple years ago. The v6 versions from the late 80's got some spunk in 1st and 2nd gear.

[ - ] __47__ 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 16:56:57 ago (+1/-0)

That's good to know. Didn't really factor in trucks in my thinking there.

[ - ] registered_bot 2 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 17:05:32 ago (+2/-0)*

The 80's Ford pickup of any size is really unbeatable, and parts are still readily available and cheap, and they all came with a manual version. I've owned 5-6 over the years, and never had a hard time fixing them, and they always keep going. Fun fact about ford stuff, modern race cars still use the ford ignition system of the solenoid on the wall next to the battery that goes right to the starter, you can jump start any of those trucks with pretty much any wrench or screwdriver.

[ - ] __47__ 0 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 17:10:05 ago (+0/-0)

Gonna have to keep all that in mind if I'm in for another car anytime soon.

[ - ] registered_bot 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 18:06:16 ago (+1/-0)

Offroad/mudbog guys and race car guys still steal the axles off those trucks for reasons. They're either a Ford 9", a dana 60, or dana 44. And they'll do absolutely nothing but put them on their custom vehicles and run them with no changes from stock form.

Ford pick up trucks from the 60-80's are just race car parts in pick up form

The steal me junction

Showed an aussie guy how this worked on his old F100. He looked terrified.

I said don't worry I won't steal it and patted him on the back.

Lol, jumpstarted more than a few in my youff. A flathead screwdrivers all that was needed

[ - ] registered_bot 0 points 3 weeksApr 2, 2025 18:48:57 ago (+0/-0)

I had an old rusted out one, you'd turn the key with the screwdriver, then get out and jump it with the same screwdriver, didn't want to take the time to fix the wiring. I'd leave it unlocked with the screwdriver laying in the door. The good old days.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 10:00:05 ago (+0/-0)

Too tall for them shortbox shits. The extended cab would work fine. But them shits are 10k plus.

Had one for quite a few years. 6speed with doc and that vtech stuff. Fun car. Enough get up and go. Good handling. Never had anything seriously go wrong mechanically. Clear coat on the trunk decided to fuck off. They get more hate than they deserve. Hit close to 9rpms. Good for DD and fun when ya wanted to open it up a bit.

I'm old enough to remember back when Mercedes was doing consumer research for designing cars for the American market.

American drivers kept asking where the cup holders were.

German engineers asked, "What do you need cup holders for?"

American drivers said, "Well to hold my coffee."

Germans were horrified. They were accustomed to German drivers operating their vehicles at 100+ mph on the autobahn, requiring complete focus.

"When we drive, we drive. We concentrate only on driving and nothing else. We drink coffee either before we leave, or after we arrive."

[ - ] observation1 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 17:50:32 ago (+2/-1)

Sounds like they don't have drive-thru's.

Even if Im not constantly sipping on my drink, I need a place to put it so it wont spill.

[ - ] Moravian 1 point 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 19:52:35 ago (+1/-0)

They have drink trays for that. Sit down relax, have a smoke, drink some coffee and talk with a friend or whatever you like to do because one day we will all be dead and you won't be able to anymore. To much of a rat race in North America. Everyone doing everything on the go.

[ - ] observation1 0 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 20:27:12 ago (+0/-0)

So pack a drink tray and balance it while driving or are you saying dont travel with a drink?

[ - ] Moravian 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 10:56:15 ago (+0/-0)

I'm just saying that usually at drive throughs they give you a disposable drink tray if you ask.

[ - ] Consensus_Reality 0 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 23:08:48 ago (+0/-0)

Europeans still struggle with the immense geographical size of the USA. They can't fathom the distances Americans will travel on a single trip, and why they would want a cup holder.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 10:06:05 ago (+0/-0)

I like when Australians ask me.

Was Boston the 50th state?

My response I'm not sure is Sydney in South Australia?

[ - ] Volf 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 06:50:22 ago (+0/-0)

That's kind of a beautiful concept, honestly. Driving is its own experience. It doesn't translate well to the North American system though, of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 2 hours at 7:30 am on the I-6 million trying to make it to your depressing office job on time for the 275th time this year. It's understandable you'd want a coffee with you in that environment.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 10:03:55 ago (+0/-0)

We're Americans we multitask. We have that extra brain cell Hans.

I just need cruise control for long road trips, you can keep the rest.

I had a 73 Plymouth Fury. Built almost like the one in the picture. Mine was that dirty diaper yellow/tan color. Ugly old beast with a hood that looked 10 foot long, but that baby could fly!

A few years back my dad bought a '78 Corvette 25th anniversary edition, and I got to drive it. Well I'm young enough to have never driven a car with no power steering before, and let me tell ya, the rumble of the engine and the sound and the smell of the gas just cast a spell over me and I was getting a little carried away and when I hit the first tight corner I was not expecting it to be that hard to turn. I kept er on the road but damn it was closer than I would've liked. I felt so alive in that moment, though. That was an experience of a lifetime. I really felt like I was piloting this powerful machine, and not just gliding over the road in silence inside some pod that half drives itself like I'm used to. Just another example of what has been stolen from us by overzealous government bureaucrats, I guess.

Go and watch the mythbusters episode back in the early 2000s when they did experiments on people texting/calling while driving.

It was clear that back then, rarely anyone could focus on driving while holding a mere conversation. Its shocking that they cant concentrate on driving while talking on the phone via speaker or wireless bluetooth.

How do these same people drive with passengers in the car to distract them if they cant even hold a conversation with someone not in the car.

People have advanced over the years and I use spotify, text and call while driving 100km+ on the highway, we adapt to our surroundings and using technology while driving is just something everyone else is going to have to adapt to.

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 10:08:43 ago (+0/-0)

Handsfree devices and Bluetooth. They're cheap and easy to invest in.

[ - ] GetFuckedCunt 0 points 3 weeksApr 2, 2025 16:08:13 ago (+0/-0)

Yes and in the early 2000s no one could focus on driving while talking on these handsfree/bluetooth devices. At least that much has changed.

I actually drove before GPS. And I still don't know how we did it.

[ - ] observation1 0 points 4 weeksApr 2, 2025 00:03:39 ago (+0/-0)*

You asked questions before you left. Wrote directions on paper. Got lost, got out of the car, asked questions, sometimes took a longer route. But did it so you'd remember it next time. We knew worst case: gas attendants knew everything.

[ - ] __47__ 0 points 4 weeksApr 1, 2025 15:51:21 ago (+0/-0)

First car I had was a 75 Benz. Didn't have many many features of today but damn if it wasn't like driving around in your favorite recliner. Eventually had to get something else when the transmission was on the way out and mechanics would have to fabricate parts to fix it.
