Adjusted for inflation, that watch would cost $2853 today. While it isn’t a Patek, Rolex or an Omega, it would be something like a Tag Heuer or an Oris—a very respectable watch for a 20 year-old college kid to have and certainly one worth keeping and passing down.

I never liked Doonsebury because like this strip I don't get the joke.

That's because it's not a joke, it's some kind of statement, and it appears to be indecipherable.

Congrats, you've just been exposed to the entire gimmick of Doonesbury. Left-wing counterculture "humor" which leaves you scratching your head trying to figure out the point and the punchline.

I remember when it was rolled out in the early 70's. All the papers carried and pushed it because because of its leftie messaging, but I never met anyone who ever read it or actually enjoyed it. Even the snobby intellectuals couldn't figure it out.

A comic that was a clear case of astroturfing by left at the time, and pretty much forgotten about today.

Don’t worry. I’m too old to be brainwashed by it. While there are a lot of Leftist sentiments, there are some irreverent jabs at ridiculous Left ideology, as well. I’d say it is 2/3rd Left, 1/3 right.

I have a really shitty and boring PT job, so I am challenging myself to see how long it will take me to read all 54.5 years of them. I figure it will take at least 3.5-4 months.

reading old comic series is a good idea to pass that time

I’m up to February, 1972 now.

Doonesbury is left wing garbage. If you're into that style of comics, I'd suggest ditching it for Bloom County. It's not nearly as left wing - still subtly is, just not in your face - and unlike Doonesbury, Bloom County is genuinely funny. There's a whole catalog going back to 1980, and should keep you well entertained on your boring job.

I agree. Bloom County was great. I used to have Billy and the Boingers Bootleg!

This is obviously missing context. 365 has some undisclosed significance. Possibly because he is 17 and getting kicked out of the house at 18.

He is around 20 in the strip. He’s in college and not a Freshman.
