Years ago, I found I was being followed by a small war-band of dusky urban yutes.

They only followed to the point where I turned off the blacktop onto a dirt road that went into the trees.

I stopped about 100 yards in, got out, and watched them through binos while they sat there and talked it over amongst themselves for a bit.

Turning onto that dirt road to follow would have represented a clear declaration of hostile intent.
They may not be smart, but they're instincts sometimes function quite well.
