A lot of those homes are abandoned not just from population decline, but also from the very strict building codes Japan has in place due to being such a disaster-prone region. Inherited properties essentially become worthless, because it would cost more to retrofit grandma's house than it would yield from a sale. That means the kids just abandon these houses, which furthers the population decline by decreasing generational wealth. There are services in Japan that will connect you with distressed property owners and basically give you the house for nearly free if you agree to perform certain repairs. But of course, the repair costs are usually astronomical. I assume there are built in regulations that prevent these places from being sold just for the land. In America there's a whole kike-dominated industry dedicated to doing that and bulldozing for development.

If anyone reading just now got the idea to move to Japan and squat in one of the houses, keep in mind that particular country will be happy to give you over a decade in prison for trespassing, and their courts have a 95% conviction rate. I guess it's free housing either way, but few homeless Japs take up the offer.
