The Romans would win.

10+ years ago, when Reddit wasn't completely trash, someone wrote a fictional story called Rome Sweet Rome

It's an extensive thought experiment much like the question you are asking. Here you go.

Edit: To add further - the big assumption in both of these scenarios is that both sides are of relatively equal IQ, work ethic, motivation, etc. Far different discussion than say the Battle of Blood River ... where 500 Boers defeated 25,000 Zulus.

Also know as "death by committee".

It would come down to night-time hit and run tactics.

The German Infantry had the precursor to everything that modern units have today. Automatic machine guns, assault style rifles, flame throwers, RPGs, accurate mortar and artillery fire. They even had Night-Vision scopes in WW II.

If the Germans had proper communications networks then they could easily mobilize and surround the 1/10th size force after any skirmish. The smaller force would have to use guerrilla tactics at night to avoid ending up fish in a barrel.

Just scale it down and you'll know.

Would 10 Germans beat 1 army?

Well I'm definitely not putting money on the guys with KAR98s against guys with M4s and M249s, grenade launchers, 50 cal M2s, Mk19s etc.

The sheer volume of pain that a modern unit, even in smaller numbers can lay down, would likely be enough to win handily without some impressive tactical advantage by the other side.

How many of them are married to 12-13 year old children?

It depends on intel. If one side decides to fight and win while the other side is trying to figure out what happened and stop perceived blue-on-blue, they aggressive side wins.

Does neither side have air support in this hypothetical scenario? Because if the smaller modern unit has an A-10 Warthog on their side, the Wermacht is fucked.
If this is just Mano e Mano, I'd say fair fight and anybody's guess who wins.
Special Forces have thousands of stories about being massively outnumbered and dominating the battle field, but rarely have they fought against a well trained unit of ubermensch

You ever see real combat?
We have standing Milita comprised of military trained private citizens armed to the teeth.
That said,
Them boys will mop up and be home for supper.
Even private technology would suffice, devastation from a huge distance without a splinter.

This is and always was a fallacious argument created by propaganda. The whole "Army of One" or "One riot one ranger" is bullshit.

EVERY battle or skirmish our troops or law enforcement have had in the last 100 years has ALWAYS been about superior numbers and better equipment. I'd argue that the US military and police are COWARDS.

A bullet doesn't discriminate. What makes the police a fearsome force? Numbers. Do you know why? Because a cop is just a person with a gun and some training and at any point someone with will and determination can send them to the grave. What often prevents that is knowing the result will be 10 other cops coming to kick in your door and your head.

So the answer you're looking for is the WW2 unit due to superior numbers.

Fuck cops and fuck the coward US military that couldn't enough snuff out a bunch of goat fuckers despite top tier weaponry, superior numbers, tactics and technology.

The material disadvantage is night vision tech, acurate optics, weight efficient kit. If the goal is amything other than total attrition the modern apecial forces win unleas they have to range from one end of enemy teritory to another over days, if it is a defensive conflict the inferior number loses defence qhen both sides have mortars. If it is about seizing teritory the modern force "wins" they would use guerilla tactics and night vision to kill swaths of germans over an extended period but they in a realistic conflict both sides would probably have leave before the german reinforcements dried up. If it's ten special forces guys vs 100 german elites and both are capturing a neutral objective at the same time, like a port, the germans probably win but if the americans do win it would take so long any realistic force would be reinforced.
