Japs treated POWs with some deep brutality. It tracks.
The Japs have always had an "us vs. them" mindset when it comes to foreign cultures and foreigners. They've basically been at war forever with China. China's actually a world power, and Japan has always been afraid of increasing Chinese aggression towards them. As a result, they just kind of go of on prisoners and POWs.
Think about it; an entire culture built upon obeying your grandparents, parents, and ancestors wishes, with no regard to your own, without an outlet for blood or violence. Where does it come out? Where else, where there's someone that they don't want.
I've been wondering this for a long time, why did North Korea and Japan treat POWs so poorly? It's a serious question I've been thinking about for at least 2 decades.

The Japs despised those who allowed themselves to be taken as war prisoners. They regarded these men as dishonourable, having lost face, and worthy only of the most severe treatment.
The Japs basically just fed white women and children to sharks among other atrocities of a like nature. Worst bunch of bastards since the Mongols. The real villains of WW2 if anyone were. No one should be sad they lost.
