Exactly. This is why drill instructors are so "harsh" on recruits. No matter how rough boot camp can be, being in the middle of war and seeing violent human death is something no man will ever be prepared for. They break you and teach you to move forward with your tribe so that when the pressure is on in the middle of a life-or-death situation, your training kicks in like second nature and you automatically act.

Also kinda why PTSD is a thing. The shock and horror is real, and it's good, it's a healthy part of being human to be horrified at the things that happen in battle. But in the middle of the battle is not the time to stop and deal with that. Not if you want to survive anyway.

That doesn't make the shock and horror go away - you just backburner the "dealing with it" part. Some guys, for various reasons, let it pile up too much.
