Five years ago we had a direct lightning strike on a HUGE Honey Locust tree in my back yard. It was over 65 years old.

The strike blew the bark completely off of one side of the tree. The bark split into shrapnel, and was sent it flying over 60 feet against our privacy fence. It knocked multiple boards off of the fence rails like a shotgun blast.

Anyone near that tree at the time of the strike would have been shredded like pulled pork.

I was walking down the back stairs (indoors, but against rear exterior wall) of my old house, when suddenly lightning struck either somewhere in my backyard, or in the neighbor's yard, or something. It was the closest I've ever been to lightning. It was so bright, everything went white, full visual washout, just from the light able to come through a smallish (~2'x4') window in the stairwell. The shockwave shook the whole house like a bomb had gone off. Sounded like a bomb too. I tried to find where it hit, but couldn't locate a burn spot. Needless to say, I was WIDE awake after that. The dogs were pissed.

I haven't been particularly close to many strikes. One though, hit a transformer maybe 100 feet away from me. Lit up everything, transformer blew, it rattled the hell out of my car, power out on the entire road, niggers probably stole all kinds of shit from the Wal-Mart. Pretty wild.
