In 2021, 76% of the country voted in an election. Assad won by 95%. The middle east works best when we don't remove democratically elected leaders from positions of power for no other reason than that they oppose Israel stealing their resources.
Syria was 70% Sunni at the start of the war. Alawites like Assad are sometimes said to not be Muslims - but they came out of Shia Islam.
Pretty much a time bomb waiting to explode. All it took was ideology like Arab socialism and pan-Arabism to fade and go into eclipse in favor of identity issues.
Assad, and Russia, it must be said, contributed heavily to driving Sunnis into Europe.
But that Assad was dealing with such realities both explains why he was so repressive and why litanies like that of @FreeinTX are worthy of something from Baghdad Bob. Saddam Hussein, a Sunni in majority Shia Iraq, got like 90% in a 'democratic' election too.
My sympathies, now, are more with Assad than not. But one doesn't have to adopt clown show talking points to say that.

But I agree with your point about removing their leaders.
