Yes, detecting disease by smell is a major part of our ancient history of healing considered "old wives tales" by modern medicine. I don't think any accredited medical school even touches upon the subject.

Diabetes was originally discovered by doctors tasting the pee of their patients. It had an abnormally sweet taste.

The name diabetes mellitus means roughly "passing through honey". Mellitus..sweet like honey. Diabetes..pass through. Peeing honey.

Didn't need any expensive lab equipment.
