I bought my 82yo boomer dad a new smart tv and hilarity ensues.

submitted by HonkyMcNiggerSpic to TellUpgoat 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 11:53:48 ago (+16/-1)     (TellUpgoat)

For years he uses an old ass 50 inch TV with a antenna box. He watches local channels only.

So I buy him a 65" Vizio smart tv. I show him all the free shit that's on it. I spent every morning and even stopped by in the evening teaching him how to operate everything. He's called me multiple times because he can't figure it out. I patiently show him again how to use it. Next day, same thing. He's totally lost.

I go down this morning and he says "I'm throwing this GD tv out the door and I want my old tv back". He was annoyed AF. So I hooked all his old stuff back up. He told me to just give the tv to somebody who needs it. I just paid almost $400 for it. I don't need it. I have nice tv's and a projector. I'm thinking about setting it in the road and hitting it at 70mph in my side-by-side and filming it. kek I don't know yet. I haven't really decided. I'm sure one of my kids might want it but I'm a wild card. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecRytTfWL8Q

Its just hard to tell what's its future is.

Based new-TV hater. Your dad honestly sounds fucking awesome.

[ - ] Spaceman84 8 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:04:35 ago (+8/-0)

You bought him a piece of shit that can barely run the integrated apps and needs to be rebooted frequently.

[ - ] hylo 8 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:26:44 ago (+8/-0)

This is what getting old and comfortable does to you.

Why not make him a cheat sheet? Print out a piece of paper with the basics so he can always refer back to it.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 5 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 19:16:49 ago (+5/-0)

At 82, I doubt he gives a fucking fuck about your fucking cheat sheet. Let the man have his comforts.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 20:52:40 ago (+1/-0)

Let the man have his comforts.

Know your customer. He doesn't want all the new bullshit, he just wants what he already has to work.

There's a device that you plug in to an internal motherboard usb slot that makes an old HDD spinny/clicky sound. It's specifically for old people who get confused if their computer isn't clicking and clacking and winding up.

I found this is the write-in section of your town's local newspaper:

My son bought me a new television, thinking he was doing me a favor. I called him multiple times to fix this damn thing. I just want to watch the news!
I told him I'm throwing this garbage TV out and demanded my old one returned to me.
Benjamin, I know you don't read the paper, but for God's sake stop masturbating all day and get a job.

[ - ] con77 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 14:06:03 ago (+1/-0)

Damn son!

[ - ] Clubberlang 5 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:29:33 ago (+5/-0)

Put it on FB market place fucktard.

Some electric jew addicted soytard will buy it.

[ - ] oyveyo 3 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:56:05 ago (+3/-0)

Your dad is based. I like your dad. Shame on you for buying him that woke TV.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic [op] 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 15:35:41 ago (+2/-0)

I set him up with all the old westerns.

[ - ] observation1 3 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 14:36:57 ago (+3/-0)*

My dad I just had to take the roku away from him and leave it on (digital) Antenna. I also physically removed the input button (no easy task) because he kept changing inputs and calling me confused. It was too much.

Rokus are unintuitive as fuck. Even smart phones Ive used for 20 years I still catch myself looking for shit. Like bringing up the address book. Or adding a new contact. Ever step into an Audi for the first time? The 7 knobs are a mystery, even though you've been driving a car your whole life. (Pulls up to station in the same truck you've owned for 5 years) "what side is the gas tank on?"

I'm probably gonna be that retarded in 50 years crying for a Nintendo to play instead of whatever gay shit the future of electronics holds

[ - ] uvulectomy 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 21:32:02 ago (+2/-0)

Roku will also spy on literally everything you do. Every channel change, every button press, every program watched. EVERYTHING.

And if you block the telemetry addresses, it will spam the everliving FUCK out of them trying in vain to get a connection. I had one for a day, figured I could keep it from being too annoying. Took it back when I saw it was spamming 20,000 queries PER HOUR in my DNS logs.

Roku execs deserve to be raped by niggers.

Did you really give your Dad a smart tv and hook it up to the internet? Why would you do that to him?

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic [op] 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 15:37:16 ago (+2/-0)

so he has more westerns and old shows to watch. damned if I do and damned if I don't

[ - ] Nosferatjew 3 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 17:11:23 ago (+3/-0)

TVs have been bullshit since they stopped making non-smart plasmas.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic [op] 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 20:24:04 ago (+0/-0)

I have an older 65" plasma. Its a bad boy.

[ - ] RobertJHarsh 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:45:01 ago (+2/-0)

All you should have done was change out the TV and gave it what he had, just with with the bigger TV. Introduce new shit slowly.

[ - ] Leveraction 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 22:07:18 ago (+0/-0)

Very sorry to hear. May your Dad rip.

My Dad died just prior to the covid bullshit. Probably a good thing

[ - ] Nietzsche 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 17:17:12 ago (+2/-0)

Jitterbug needs to get into the TV business.

[ - ] DivineLight2 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 12:26:18 ago (+1/-0)

A modern, but basic TV is the way, better image quality, no useless garbage.

Give the TV to a local nigger/kike hater

[ - ] germ22 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 13:27:26 ago (+1/-0)

All TV's these days are "smart" TV's.

[ - ] SteppingRazor 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 13:40:42 ago (+1/-0)

Right? It’s not like you can buy a flip phone version of the TV. I just don’t allow it to touch the internet.

[ - ] germ22 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 14:29:02 ago (+0/-0)

I want to buy a new tv for an additional computer monitor. I wonder if it would be wise to open it up and take out the wifi module.

[ - ] SteppingRazor 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 15:49:00 ago (+0/-0)

I wouldn't unless you know what you're doing. Why not just never let it connect and leave the wifi off?

[ - ] uvulectomy 2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 21:40:44 ago (+2/-0)

You can never be 100% sure the wifi is off, unfortunately, short of clipping/desoldering the antenna.

I've got an older LG "smart" TV and the ethernet doesn't get plugged in. Then on the router I have the TV's wifi MAC address blocked by the parental controls. For extra peace of mind, I also have the DHCP server set to explicitly deny an IP to that same MAC address. And finally in my DNS server I have the known LG ad domains and all that "AllJoyn" crap blacklisted.

[ - ] VitaminSieg 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 15:50:00 ago (+1/-0)

I bought an RCA last year that's not smart. You can still find these things.

[ - ] Leveraction 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 22:10:35 ago (+0/-0)

Right.

Give me or him a fucking tv that you turn on and turn off. Do not need the extra bullshit on it. Keep it simple

[ - ] SteppingRazor 1 point 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 13:39:21 ago (+1/-0)

I don’t blame him, I bought two the past few years. I ended up turning off the internet on the TV and use an AppleTV box for all the apps. Much easier interface and you can control the spying better.
The final straw for me was some banner advertising about nigger history month. Fuck LG and their nigger worshipping.
Spend the extra money for OLED, the rest don’t compare.

Boomer - Ok, how do I work this thing?
Millennial - Just click here.
Boomer - Why did you tell me to click there? That isn't the command prompt.
Millennial - Command... what? I don't know what those words mean. Just click that right there.
Boomer - We haven't configured the ports, or set the IP address yet. It's not going to work.
Millennial - I don't understand what you're saying. Just click there.
Boomer - We need to install the firmware first, or it isn't going to work.
Millennial - Fir.. firm... WHAT? I don't understand your old timey words. Just click there.
Boomer - Will that open the terminal? Why isn't that labelled terminal?
Millennial - Here. Just click here. Like this. There you go.
Boomer - Oh. It worked. So how often do I need to update this?
Millennial - What? Update? What does that even mean?
Boomer - This makes no fucking sense. Get this confusing piece of shit out of here.

You've got your generations mixed up. Replace Boomer with Gen X and Millenial with Gen Z.

[ - ] Not_C 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 19:09:06 ago (+1/-1)

Every Gen Xer will tell you that's definitely the Boomer generation in the story.

Boomers know far, FAR more about tech than Millennials and Gen Z.
Because Boomers spent the entire time between Christmas and New Years every year being taught how to use their electronics.

Meanwhile, the training Millennials and Gen Z got was handing them baby toys that lit up and made noises when they touched them. Then given tech that is no more complicated than that.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 22:04:18 ago (+0/-0)*

Bullshit. It was really just the younger boomers- and of those, only the nerdy subset that engaged in computer tech. Gen X and early Millennials were into said tech in higher percentages. Keep in mind that "Millennial" starts from 1981 and ends in '96. Only the youngest or most oblivious of them have never heard of command terminals.

[ - ] Not_C 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 23:28:51 ago (+0/-0)

only the nerdy subset that engaged in computer tech

What kind of imaginary world do you live in?

Every Boomer had a computer, printers, scanners, digital cameras, etc, etc. All separate peripherals. Back in the olden days when people didn't have an all-in-one device like a smartphone.
And each individual thing had to be hooked up, configured, made compatible, and all of that.
Each year Gen Xers would spend their Christmas holidays teaching Boomers how to set it up and use it.

Every family had a computer, and every Boomer had one. With each and every separate peripheral.

Meanwhile, Millennials and GenZ are growing up with "tech" that is no more complicated than baby toys.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 3 monthsMar 6, 2025 00:11:55 ago (+0/-0)

Telling you again that you have your generations mixed up. My mom was born in '48. My dad '52. She's useless with tech; was barely able to operate a TV remote in the '90s. My dad is and was always a geek and can handle his own. It's a pretty even split among their age group whether or not they can handle tech at all. Again, Millennials were born into tech at its zenith and know what they're doing; you're just looking for a reason to bash them. You're right that Gen X did know it, but they are to blame for being the ultimate "middle management" generation.

[ - ] Not_C 0 points 3 monthsMar 6, 2025 02:04:42 ago (+0/-0)

No one needs to look for a reason to bash Millennials for being the 2nd most technologically incompetent generation alive, only surpassed by GenZ.

Their generation can't operate "tech" unless it's instant plug and play, or if a task takes more than 3 clicks to perform.
Their peak ability in troubleshooting and repair is - Turn it off and on again. Anything more complicated than that is too advanced for them.

And to go back to the beginning - The few and far between examples of people complaining about Boomers "struggling" with tech is almost always a result of them attempting to overcomplicate things and being too smart for their own good.

Also, if you ever try to win an argument - Telling people about your poor genetics won't help.

And don't give me any of this 44 year old Millennial bullshit. No one born before the 90s would ever call themselves a Millennial.
Millennials are a distinct.... culture in time.... age bracket... generational culture bracket... (I don't know how to word that, but you know what I mean).

Command prompt is Windows, Terminal is Linux.

[ - ] boekanier 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 13:20:54 ago (+0/-0)

Don't make your old dad miserable like that. He didn't ask for that TV, give it to the first person who passes by.

[ - ] TheNoticing -2 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 16:01:56 ago (+0/-2)

Nothing personal against your dad, but boomers are fucking retarded and the country will be better off when they're all gone.

[ - ] Leveraction 0 points 3 monthsMar 5, 2025 22:13:03 ago (+0/-0)

Newsflash cupcake ...you too will get old, believe it or not, and the younger ones will say the same thing about YOU! You ain't special sweet cheeks

[ - ] TheNoticing 0 points 3 monthsMar 6, 2025 14:25:44 ago (+0/-0)

Boomers worship the ground kikes walk on. Not all but far too many, probably over 80% of them do.
