I hate how misused the word "Viking" is. Viking does not describe a race or a culture- it's sort of like a "job". The people were called Danes or Norsemen. They spent most of their time farming and hunting.

But when the weather was right, and if a Jarl had determined that they could gain riches and power with a raid, they would invite volunteers to join the "Viking". You are only a "Viking" while on the raid. When you're returned, you are just a Danish farmer again.

One of the things that really shows how advanced the Danes were, was their method of forging steel. They made a form of crucible steel by twisting the molten metal into plaits, it's really cool and it results in a very pure, strong steel. No barbarians on earth were able to do shit like this.

The whole notion of them being unwashed savages comes as propaganda from terrified Christians. Those horned helmets that are stereotypically associated with "Vikings"? Yeah, not real, nobody would put two fucking handles onto their helmet they are going into battle with. The Christians were trying to evoke imagery of the devil with the horns and shit.
