My latest 3D printed garbage (laptop case, saved me from having to buy a new laptop)

the screen on the laptop is cracked and i lost the keyboard. im going to be learning cnc at a facility and will need a laptop. this laptop would work but to move it around i have to pick up the power cord, keyboard, power supply, and mouse while the USB hub is dangling off of it and the screen is cracked. This makes me look like a homeless person. So option 1: Buy a new laptop. Option 2: print out some plastic garbage. In this case I saved several hundred dollars by not having to buy a new laptop. 3D printer skeptics, I rest my case.

That's pretty creative.

I haven't seen those colors used in consumer facing products since 1998.

I love functional prints like this. 4 different filaments, big beefy hinges, and a fucking handle! Good job!

Did you design this model?

yeah, it was extremely frustrating because im not very good with autodesk. i can share the .stl's

if you do print it BR2.stl (bottom right) is missing the groove that you see on the bottom left panel so either put that in or do what i did and add more glue.

thanks man!

Bro I love it! I want to print something similar now, and my laptop is fine.

Now you'll look like a homeless guy who owns a 3D printer.

3D skeptic here, how long did you have to rest your case before it was ready to use?

Should have made it out of K'NEX. Missed opportunity

That must have been at least 2 nights worth of printing. Pretty cool work, but I think those handles might not stand up to regular use.

You're "going places" now, with a 3d printed lapdog lol. Awesome job dude

I laughed hard, mostly because my laptop setup is similar with a bunch of cords and everything sitting on a sizeable cutting board.

If anyone at the job gives you shit, "need my first paycheck to buy something less ridiculous...still runs CNC!"

Wow tat looks so uncomfortable to work on

[ - ] titstitstits [op] 1 point 3 monthsFeb 28, 2025 01:46:02 ago (+1/-0)

ergonomics were considered but there's things i didn't know till it was done. it's fine. not meant for heavy typing

Nice, I love functional prints. My dishwasher is a little retarded; so I printed a clamp to keep it shut while running. The manufacturer just gave the poor thing a really shitty latch. I've printed a bunch of computer stuff too like back-plates and hard drive caddies, case feet, etc. My little $100 Ender 3 has probably paid for itself several times over at least, and the modeling skills are very useful. You can also use this AI tool to just describe objects, and the AI takes care of modeling them. https://zoo.dev/text-to-cad

that's pretty cool. i want it to work but you'd have to describe each dimension and then ask it to make adjustments, etc. i asked it to make an extendable desk mounted arm and it just drew 4 disconnected plates. but it'll get there, one way or another, eventually.

i'm thinking cnc might be fairly safe from ai automation because of all the little things you have to do in the real world.
