I remember when a search engine would return over 1 million different hits - now it's mostly dead internet theory (the same 'sponsored links' fill the search page and it loops back to repeat after several pages).

I was looking for documentation about a local elections that was rerun a few years ago because ostensibly some absentee ballots were counted after a deadline.
Only yandex could find it.
Bing, google brave just didn't have any hits.

This is absolutely true, unfortunately. Russia's Google is the only search engine worth using.

Best example - it's literally impossible to find Mr. Robot's S2E2 scene "You can't have the CON without the CONFIDENCE", if you search any American search engine or even searching Youtube itself.. but the entire first page of Yandex search results finds the video.

It's fucking disgusting.

If I want to find a torrent I use a torrent website. If I want to find an ebook I use an ebook website. If I want to find a tv show I use a tv show website.

One could use google to find a video piracy website, perhaps with the web search 'video piracy guide'.

Agreed. I use yandex.eu for english search (because .com is blocked). I remember when google destroyed all other search and produced results that were both relevant and useful. Now it's totally useless, broken beyond usability. Even for run of the mill tech questions

Even beyond forbidden stuff, it actually searches the web. Google went all in on the "authority" score. Now it only links to stackoverflow, reddit, and WaPo/CNN/nShit. So I don't even think they bother to index a lot of the internet. Why? If you aren't going to link to it.
