With the wording he used I think it's a trap to catch fake accounts getting paid. You just have to reply, not with any substance in particular. If you reply with 'I've done nothing', you might be safe. No reply = termination because probably ghost payment.
In reality skilful fraudsters will find a way to explain away something. This only targets fraudsters that aren't clever enough to know how to misdirect. Individuals such as shoe-in nepotism hires, etc.
But, the ability to explain last week wouldn't be hard. "Duties consistent with my job description"
And if they don't have a job description, it follows that the fraudsters became greedy and sloppy.
