I've seen a longer version of this video.
It's training for autorotation.
So, fake and gay, but still impressive that it can be pulled off.

Still pretty balls to the wall. That fear in the trainees voice was real.

Ever see an H-3 or an H-52 practicing autorotations? The sound alone could scare the hell out of you.

no but I had one h52 ditch right beside my 82 footer as I was preparing a patient for medevac! I covered the patient with my body and watched the rotors spin a few feet above us and about 4 ft from the pilot house! that was a close one. transmission failure

At least they were designed for water landings. The dolphins weren't.
Did you tow them in or abandon?

I believe they sent a salvage barge from L.A.

This is how our society could be...

Calm, in the face of utter destruction.

Practical, by means of diverting said catastrophe.

Humble, in success of an unbelievable accomplishment.

I saw an autorotation of an H300 a student (with instructor) was performing in which they came down to fast and hit the ground with such force that the main rotor blades bent down and chopped off the tail boom. The thing went over the side and all the main rotor blades were torn off. Hull loss = 100%

Here are the receipts (Note: This was a long time ago and my camera was a potato):

Had to glue the tail back on a bird which did exactly that. Shit ton of welding but its still flying to this day.
