Beautiful day. Found my digital Walkman from 2008

submitted by Conspirologist to technology 3 monthsFeb 20, 2025 08:45:10 ago (+13/-3)     (technology)

I lost my digital Walkman many years ago. After that, iTunes was discontinued, so I never bought another Walkman.

Today I found it. Cleaned and charged. Everything works like new. The glorious Walkman is Sony NWZ-A828.

For all these years I was only listening streaming radios.

Today I was blown away by the sound quality of AAC non compressed codec with CD bitrate quality sound.

Lucky for me, my Walkman has more than 600 songs from 80s & 90s stored. I'm having a really great day. I forgot how beautiful non compressed music is, especially from 80's & 90's, it has even stereo effects.

P.S. Fuck modern junk muisc and low bit rate streaming radios junk.

Yarp. Outside of a few niche digital formats like FLAC, you will get loss in quality. Even these formats are still techmically compressing the waves and therefore creating minute amounts of distortion after decompression. It will never compare to analogue sound though.

Best you can do is get an external DAC (digital-analogue converter) to more efficiently convert those 1s and 0s to a decompressed sinusoidal waveform.

I find it extremely hard to explain to people the difference between a digital spotify streaming experience, an analogue vinyl record, and the sound of music while you're sitting in the middle of an orchestral band playing your instrument completely surrounded by a sound you can tangibly feel. They are completely different. You don't know until you experience it.

I'm not an audiophile who knows everything about file formats, but I can play several woodwinds competently, and I know nothing compares to that sensation of sound and vibration that runs through your whole body while playing/listening to the music you and dozens of other people are creating together. Addicting like a drug, man.

AAC is not compressed from CD quality bit rate, illiterate imbecile.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is an audio coding standard for lossy digital audio compression. It was designed to be the successor of the MP3 format and generally achieves higher sound quality than MP3 at the same bit rate.

In some ways having shit ears is beneficial. I'll never be a record producer, but I can listen to music on any shit format with no bother. I totally understand audiophiles, and think it's cool they can be so discerning. But I can listen to an mp3 version and a version of the same thing pressed on vinyl yesterday barely telling a difference.

Agreed, also when they cut the cords and made everyone go boobtoof things really got to suck.
