An index fund is a good choice. It's extremely hard to outperform an index fund unless you a) get lucky with a single stock, b) spend all your time learning about the markets and after 10+ years you might figure out how.
The investing game with "timing" the market to most retards is a losing game because even the fastest reports of news even in todays instant information age have already moved through the stock market. Professionals never talk their book, and always make profit by simply understanding what the retards will do and betting against them with 10-1000x the leverage.
