I'm not a dry waller. How would you do this otherwise? I can't think of any. The only downside I could see with this is if your stair construction is shitty one side might not exactly match the other.
You gotta patch little edges of the cut even if its cut perfectly to shape because drywall crumbles at the edge before it's hidden by trim or filled with mud.
