BBC – UK government orders Apple to comply with

UK government has ordered Apple to create a backdoor that would effectively break encryption for millions of users - an unprecedented attack on privacy rights

Big Brother Watch has been ringing alarm bells about the possibility of precisely this scenario since the adoption of the Investigatory Powers Bill in 2016.

We all want the government to be able to effectively tackle crime and terrorism, but breaking encryption will not make us safer. Instead it will erode the fundamental rights and civil liberties of the entire population - and it will not stop with Apple.

"Breaking" the encryption means leaving it open. Which means anyone could access it, providing they find the opening. Which they would know is there.

I sometimes wonder what would happen if a WN owned some mega-corp and just didn't give a fuck. Consolidate your buildings, set guards willing to kill cops, and tell the gov to eat shit. And don't headquarter in that government's lands.

I was in the UK 2x back in the late 2000's.

The cities didn't seem overrun with brown people. We walked for most of a day around London and saw pretty much everything on the list. The country folk have it way better - it's nice outside the cities.

But, DAMN even then there was a shocking amount of surveillance. Those white rectangular cameras were EVERYWHERE outside. If you've ever read 1984, it gave you that sense.

The Blitz really fucked that populace up - there were ready to give up A LOT for their government to provide them some sense of security.

Now they are locking up people for 'wrongspeak' and talking about blunting the end of kitchen knives.

God help them.

You can lead a Brit to water, but you can't make them think.

(same as most people)
