My progressive ideals started to wobble and my heart quickly hardened to suffering – a consequence of constant exposure to the worst effects of addiction, crime and mental illness. It’s much easier to maintain a clement view of humanity when the saddest, harshest elements of it are not nipping at your heels for 10 hours straight.

When the rose-colored glasses come off.

I work closely adjacent to our EMS services. The turnover rate at 911 is immense. People can not hack that job. Some only last a few days.

Location likely contributes. Nobody would want to deal with Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta...but get the chance to work in a smaller city with less bullshit, might not be so bad.

Then, places like Milwaukee also have a residency requirement. Want to work for the city or county? Best live in the jurisdiction you want to work for. That will DEFINITELY help attract talent.

I'm in a suburb of Atlanta, and one of the more affluent ones at that. Crime is worse than you'd expect given the median income and demographic, sure, but the amount of public safety calls that I'm privy to that area suicides/attempts, mental health issues, welfare checks, etc are significant.

Context: in Cherokee County.

I can tolerate Cherokee. Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb are all a big no for me.

In the affluent area, is "demographics" a factor?

The decline of Cobb is insane. It was so nice when we'd visit my aunt and her family in Marietta when I was a kid.

I'm south of Atlanta. LOTS of our arrests are coming from DeKalb, Atlanta, and the areas surrounding the airport even though that's not the demographics here.

The wife and I have discussed at length moving up your way.

If you want to go a bit past, Jasper is about to open a Publix!

I considered opening a store on Marietta Square, but after spending a couple days down there, it was not "relaxable".

A conservative is a liberal who has been kicked in the teeth by reality.

And...a Progressive sees what he believes. With a Conservative it's the other way around.

Exactly. I didn’t hate niggers until I lived in NYC for a few years. That’ll do it…
