Y’all arose out of a linguistic failure with English itself. We no longer have a word to describe second person plural. We used to have one. We don’t anymore. The thee/thou distinction has been replaced with you/you, and so you are forced to have context in order to understand the number of listeners. you/y’all, however, tells you exactly what’s going on.

We should have done a global English reform in the early 20th century like they planned. I hate dudes from Texas who talk like they're trying to force a super southern accent. Sounds fucking retarded. I'm from a small country Texas town and I have a slight natural southern accent, and can talk like an absolute white trash cowboy if I want to, but I normally speak like I paid attention in English class in school.
