It would take longer than 1.5 hrs to make the shittiest possible version of this, just welding bits together. To do the nice hot-forging seen in the vid is a is at least a full day.

Na m8, you can't judge something like that based on your personal skill level, it comes down to manufacturing techniques.
Also, this is not a hand made piece, it's obviously mass produced by machinery from the absence of asymmetrical forging marks.
Grabbing & cutting the materials: 10 minutes Heating a 1" bar red and pressing notches in it: 25 minutes Pressing 6x 1/2" bars into flat-tails: less than 15 minutes Curving & drilling 2 hinge pieces: a generous 10 minutes Welding it together in a jig: 5 minutes Hiding the welds behind a piece of folded flatbar: 10 minutes Sharpening a piece of flatbar & putting a hole in it: 10 minutes Final assembly: Less than a minute
That's also assuming that the center piece is simply not cnc-plasma cut from plate and pressed afterwards to give it its tapered shape.
Might even be by the same guy, same red plank wall. Anyway his channel is great, shows how many forms are traditionally made. Wee more than 1.5 hrs me thinks.
Not the same building at all, the OP is old barn wood, in your vid it's modern siding.
Definitely more than 1.5hrs is blacksmithing the entire thing old school style, I'm just not convinced that the one in the OP is hand made... 20+ years in custom manufacturing, just saying.
Ditto, about 25 years custom metalworking/welding.
Look closely at the handle, it has burn marks in a "rope twist", thats handmade in a coal/coke fire. Also the splayed brace ends have loads of hand-hammer marks.
I've done this type of finish with a 12v power supply, washing soda & a tub of water. A light & blotchy paint over-spray on the metal you want to etch will help create the uneven pitting effect. Time in the tub dictates the depth.
There was a huge demand for imitation forgings/old metal look by contractors a few years ago around here, everyone wanted rough cut/live edge lumber attached with steel or old timey accents here and there. Went through quite a few zip guns faking that hammer finish, although a blunt punch & a solid round piece for a die on an iron worker does nice work on bigger plates. I've become pretty cynical towards all the vintage, hand made or forged labels I see on products.
Ever worked with a chinese rough iron machine? They're a huge game changer:
You are into mass-manufacture techniques, good on ya mate. But there are plenty of tell-tales the piece in OP is hand-forged in a small, hot fire.
The main/spine bar is one piece, you can see the bandsaw blade gap where he cut it into 1/4s. The handle is also the same piece as the blade, just with groves chiseled/stamped in before hot-twisting.
The pitting you made by electrolysis is an extreme imitation of what happens to steel when it get hot enough to oxidize with present oxygen, atmospheric or induced, though this method has different patterns than the electrolysis one.
I don't want to dribble on, and won't risk doxxing myself, so I won't post photos. But I am 100% sure the piece in OP was hand made. I only care because I don't like people belittling the beautiful products of hard work made the old ways. It's a major part of what makes White people the best.
Itβs about as heavy as two longswords, but most of the force of splitting the wood is being distributed to the planks of wood of the wall through that iron backbrace.
