Social contract theory. If someone agrees to the social contracts associated with becoming a catholic Christian, behaviour becomes policed by the community. If you successfully faithfully follow those social contracts, with or without reasonable help, your origin doesn't matter.

But, if your genes somehow dictate your destiny and make you incapable to follow those social contracts, you get excommunicated when sufficient violation becomes clear to the community.
