I think what I miss the most is the artwork of record albums. Records were on their way out by 1980, but still hanging around. A lot of artistry and thought went into designing an album cover, and it really set the tone of the music before you even got it out of the wrapper. Some album covers were even interactive, like Led Zeppelin III, Physical Graffiti, just to name a couple. Really took those days for granted.

You know, we didn't really have a lot of stuff back in the day, so we really appreciated that stuff we did have. I think that's the magic of why we hold these things dear. We had so little options that we valued the stuff that we did have. Releases of things were slower, so we had time to appreciate them. Not like today where we're surrounded with stuff, it's overkill, and we don't have the time to appreciate them before the next great must-have thing drops.

I think you're right on all counts, but I do honestly believe there's been a massive drop in artistry in general. Not only in album covers which suffered because of shrinkage, but book covers as well. Heck, really just any medium you can imagine. Music, movies, etc. Don't know if it's due to the general dumbing down of society, an abundance of wealth that resulted in a lack of motivation, or what, but it's noticeable.

Yeah, My guess is that, in the early 80's at least, innovators had time to Create, Produce, and Release items, and then more competition appeared on the scene faster, and as time went, the time from concept to production & release dramatically sped up, and, more competitors came on to the scene making it a necessity to get product to market faster than the other guy... Now our technology comes from another country, and is obsolete before it gets out of the box...

I have disagree with the creator of this video on what was considered "completely necessary". Waterbeds? Nah. MTV? Utter waste of time. At least half of the list was just fad stuff, like arcades. I did get a laugh that the chapter title of "phone books" came up as "foam books".

Necessary to stay out of trees and give the hand eye coordination a great workout for a quarter in front of your peers (in my case nz 20 cents)

Dot matrix printers are still used in some industries because they are either faster or cheaper to run. They are pretty specialized and higher quality than the consumer versions, but definitely not obsolete.
