Hopefully this works, my 3 year old Goldendore had his first squirrel the other day, he regularly catches pigeons, rabbits and digs out mice and eats them(also loves to chase deer but hasn't ever caught one), just thought I would share as he was pleased as punch with himself, carried all the way around our 2 hour woodland walk and so I allowed him to bring it home and eat his prize.
He's raw fed and so I have no issue with him eating things he catches generally (as long as I know he's killed it).
My labradork 'caught' his first on one of our walks. It had something wrong and couldn't use it's back legs. He walked right up to it, sniffed it, and wagged his tail. Then he walked off.
The dummy gets all excited to see them and even runs over to them but the first time he catches up to one he just wants to be friends.
That's lovely, mine used to dig out the mice and play with them by tossing them up in the air then running after them, one day he tossed one and caught it, then realised that they were like his food and then link was made. He's always been a hunter I'm afraid, he does have some off the wall habits also.
Lovely breed the labs, mine weighs about 40kg and is as soft as they come with other dogs and people/children.
Nice, ours loves squirrels, pigeons, and the occasional crow. I try not to let her eat mice or rats as there are a lot of people poisoning them around here. It is a little disconcerting seeing her water bowl with blood in it, luckily it's always been her "snacks"

Thankfully our walks are very rural so the poison thing isn't an issue. You know, now you mention it, he's never even chased a crow. Your dog sounds like a character.
I had a lab that was a squirrel killer. When he was a pup I knocked a squirrel out of a tree with a pellet gun. It didn't kill the squirrel. Miller saw it fall and ran over to pick it up. It bit him hard on his snout. He yelped while having that squirrel hanging from his nose. We all laughed. It was war from that day on. He would stalk them then run hard to intercept them running to the nearest tree. He would not chase the squirrel, he would run for the tree they planned to escape to. He was good and likely killed over a hundred squirrels. He liked cats too. He got a neighbors cat right in front of her. Pissed me off cause we took the cat to the vet and he died there. Cost me 270 dollars. She was a hottie too and I had planned on asking her out. LOL
Reading the thread title, I pictured you to be an extremely impoverished Appalachian local who has no choice but to send his child out to subsist off of varmints. Had no idea you were talking about your dog.

Paul, since dogs have been here they've chased cats, it's life. Both of my dogs actually got on well with our cat and so I try to not create scenarios that haven't happened, I try taking life head on really, that way I don't end up with a head full of shit about things that have never happened but possibly could.
There's a risk of parasites and "a small chance of contracting diseases like leptospirosis if the squirrel was carrying the bacteria". Keep an eye on him and maybe check with 'fish and game' for local squirrel diseases? All I know about it is wild game in some areas should be avoided due to various health risks. Here's a deer example.
Can you cook CWD out of deer? No. Unlike bacteria and parasites that can be killed through the cooking process, CWD prions cannot be cooked hot enough at home to make them un-infectious. Incineration is necessary to render these prions un-infectious, which leaves no meat to consume.
Chronic Wasting Disease (like Mad Cow) eats your brain until it doesn't work anymore. The squirrel was probably fine, but it might be worth checking to keep that good boy healthy.
CWD is only found in cervids and has never jumped species despite tens, probably hundreds of thousands of people having eaten CWD positive deer and other cervid meat.

Whatever ate your brain was not CWD.
