Is it possible to live in the subway and not leave it? Like pay once and just keep riding the trains? Are there places to buy food down there and hit the restrooms?
Maybe @bigguyfromqueens can comment. When I used to go into the city in the 80's, the tickets had an expiration. You could buy a single ride, a day, a week. Every now and then a "cop" would ask for your ticket and give out fines if you were riding without proper fare. I think you can buy food there, but it's pricey gas station food, so not really all that great. If you want to sleep there, you'd have to find someplace safe from the bums and gangs. Probably not a real nice way of life, and you would basically be a dirty homeless bum.

BULLSHIT NIGGER. I grew up NYC and rode subway to high school in the 80s. There were no "tickets". Tokens is what they used, you put it in the turnstile, and entered the system. Students like myself had a pass you showed to the booth and went through the exit gate.
well i certainly could be remembering incorrectly, as it was quite a long time ago, but we would take the train in from CT and I specifically remember holding tickets and riding the subway.

No, you can't really live there in the conventional sense of the word. There are a small number of news stands and a few restrooms, but not a lot. People do sleep on the train and you see them at 4am. The unlimited monthly cards are maybe 130ish and you could probably pick one up if that is your goal.
What you won't hear about is that there are people that live in the tunnels. There was a documentary about the mole people. Basically, there are communities that live in there. They know about all the places that are not on the map. There are several stations that have been decommissioned and boarded up and you can't get into them unless you know where to look. Stuff under central park and whatnot. The Jews also have tunnels too but those are for rats.

It is unreal to think about what goes on down there.

They are a fucking nightmare though, and smell worse than a zoo most times.

If you have the means to pay, then you pay. If so, find a decent place to live.
