Actually there is some debate as to who built the great wall. It faces the wrong way unless the intent was to keep people in.

All the smartest ones got killed in the communist purges. Tens upon tens of millions of Chinese who resisted the entire notion of communism. Lots of them were highly educated or just really sharp. Their names got put onto lists and they were disappeared, either shot dead or taken somewhere for torture.

It's hard to imagine what a gene pool that loses 100 million+ people in such a short time. The smartest and best of them were taken out, too- leaving the rest as just a bunch of submissive cowards. It couldn't have worked out better for the party.
