Plants only absorb CO2 during photosynthesis. At night they actually take in O2 and give off CO2.

Well you peaked my curiosity. From what I found, it is a continuous process so most plants are always taking in some oxygen it's just that at night they are not taking in the CO2 so it sounds dramatic to say it that way. Some plants like cacti and succulents can take in CO2 at night and it somehow helps with water conservation but they too are usually taking in a small amount of oxygen.
