Yeah I'm not buying that the missile itself can't detonate on a US target. I will concede that a US strategic command center's targeting software is aware of the positions of ships and will not allow the operators to target them. But the missile itself doesn't care who the fuck it blows up.

@xmasskull ...I don't think it's the paint but there is some type of frequency emitted from military, law enforcement and Intel agency equipment and facilities...even border ports and vehicles have it...try taking a picture of a fed agency license plate or something within a 500ft radius of a border crossing, either a digital SLR camera or cell phone and even digital video, they go blank until out of range of the frequency...as a point of interest...back in the 80s and early to mid 90s, our organization had a group of "unknowns" with no history of being persons of interest to the cops and they used the old C110 film cameras to snap off photos of undercover license plates, residency, clandestine meeting points (one was a cemetery) and places of frequent gathering ie restaurants and bars...this technology has been out for a while...fuck, one of our bros had an RCMP tracking device (bug) planted in the heel of his riding boot, and this was in 86...much of the tech being used today is simply stuff that is upgraded from the 60s and 70s.
