That's the premise they used to launch a giant human spaceship from an island north of Seattle with hangers full of shuttles to fight two-trunked alien invaders in Footfall by Niven/Pournelle. They used nuclear bombs pumped into the bowl to achieve orbit.
Theoretically, it would work.
