Right, if you think that Trudeau is just going to walk off into the sunset and lead a private, quiet life... you haven't been paying attention to western politicians. There's no such thing as "retirement" for them- even after losing their position (for any given reason), they are still in the game.

The only difference is now they do not have to answer to oversight committees (as toothless as they are) and all that kind of thing. They can operate with absolute impunity.

In Trudeau's case, he was always just the witless face. I agree with your overall point 100%, but I'm not convinced they need him for anything at all any more. Just more lawfare and politicking. He did not actually resign. He announced his intention to resign at an indefinite date in the future, and then shut down parliament.

He knows this will quiet down and confuse the masses enough to just keep right on rolling. He's still in control and even parliament can't stop him now.

Odds are it's going to be Carney. The only reason they may not use him yet is the fact that he may still lose to Pierre because people hate Trudeau that much.

So the other likely scenario is they put in some sacrificial lamb to keep Carney clean for now, then roll him out after the upcoming defeat.

Either way it's going to be Carney soon. He's already passed all the loyalty tests and they're salivating to have a "respectable" leader again.

I could see Freeland being the sacrificial lamb, but despite her appearance, she's probably not quite dumb enough to be the fall-guy.

It's not a resignation; it's exactly what cowards do when they know that they are about to lose their power. He's proroguing Parliament which means that nothing can be done until they return in March, and he only intends to leave when the party is able to find a replacement, which might mean even more months. Don't expect a new Prime Minister until next October or so.
