I can attest to this from secondary stories.

Back in the 70s, my father was a Sergeant in Philly. All his men were drinking on shift.

He showed up in a bar one time because another cop dimed them out. They were all drinking. He took them all to the "front" (punishment). They all got off.

Then, my father is arguing with the Captain. Captain agrees that the men cannot drink. Some asshole argues with it. He wins. Now my dad had to compromise with his men saying, "As long as I don't see it, you are fine."

This shit really happened in Philly back in the 70s.

Drinking on the job wasn't uncommon at all in big city police departments back in the 70's. Your father's story in unfortunately one of several I've heard/read about from big city cops in the 70's.

There's a postmaster (post office manager) who lives down the street from me. His employee horror stories are quite frankly disturbing.

Probably did haha. The real story I've heard on that is the post office got some new standards from congress at the beginning of the 80's and they started squeezing the employees really hard for productivity and shit. Just a ton of new rules and regulations that dramatically increased stress levels for staff.
