Reducing DB cost is something I know about. I could have saved first voat. From what I could tell they weren't even trying to write software in a way that would reduce costs. They started with Azure which was way too expensive. They moved to an alternative eventually that halved the costs. But that's where they stopped. Zero code wen't into making it efficient. I think in the end they were out $50k a year running that (what they said). Imagine being out $50k and not picking up a book or rewriting a few lines.

I have an old proline server and mysql. I can throw up an instance on one server and hit benchmarks for this site. A fuooking T-1 line is only $200.00 a month now-a-days.

I have no idea why it costs so much to run these sites. (although there is some interesting fine print in the Digital Millennium copy-write act, that may have something to do with it. HINT: you can't actually run a site like this without the gov O.K.'s)

Although your suspicion is correct, I did look into planting "yellow crooknecks" but she-who-dictates-garden-policy had yet another new planting direction. She's decreed "no more squash" because, while she likes them, and while we got a reasonable crop this season for the first time ever, she thinks the space could be better used for Silverbeet and Shallots. Aussies got screwed with that deprecated version of English. Why would they call chard (swiss chard) silverbeet? It's not silver, and it has no edible taproot.

Good choice in the garden though. Whitestems are best, imo. I believe Fordham/Fordhook giant is one of the best producers.
