I saw https://www.upgoat.net/viewpost?postid=67749dcf12f32 and was going to make a snarky comment about AOU and was denied. I could not believe the irony of a sub about poal banning people just like AOU does.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Most likely shutting down sometime this year. Our hosting provider increased prices by 3x. They are grandfathering in our old price but that's temporary and when that ends I am throwing in the towel. Would have shut down in October had they not offered to do that.

It's almost been 4 years. Organic growth is impossible on the modern day internet thanks the corporations who control it. People prefer the corporate slop larping as free speech anyway anyway. Plus I want to spend less time on the internet. It's just tiring at this point.

I am still debating on what to do. There's a couple options I am considering. There is Plebbit. https://seedit.eth.limo/#/hot. It's not a great experience but with a few people hosting nodes it could work. I like the idea of a truly serverless and adminless website. No idea how to implement it but I could experiment with it. Another option I could open up a bitcoin addy. Our host accepts it. If the site is paying for itself then it could remain online indefinitely. But I don't think this is viable. Not enough traffic here and bitcoin is still too obscure.

unfortunately MasklessTheGreat has a point... This place is dying a slow death. It gets a few dozen posts a day at best and a good number of the commenters are obvious trolls. The community of old voat has been shattered and cast to the wind.There are other places but they are just as small and isolated as hear.

Everyplace is a honeypot... The places that are not a honeypot are eventually compromised and become a honeypot retroactively. There are university faggots hosting a downloadable copy of the old voat.co database so you can data-mine every comment, every user, every post... in time I expect the same will be true (if not already) of poal and upgoat and patriots.win and ConPro and GreatAwakeneing, etc., etc, etc.

The only protection is obscurity, and that means it is not effective as a mass communication platform. Either you swim in glownigger infested waters or you shout into the darkness where no one is listening. Its depressing but I do not think we will ever get an 'old voat' type of place again

In truth even old voat was not the 'golden age' but (and I know this may be hard to hear) in fact 'old reddit' was. Remember that voat itself was a reaction to reddit turning woke. Voat had thousands of users but was still something of an echo chamber. Old reddit back in the day, like 2001, had millions of users and little to no moderation and had voices from every perspective
