ChatGPT is good at writing out shit code one could find on StackOverflow and that's about it. So yes, it can replace a copy/pasting idiot, which isnt saying much
so every single indian. really, anyone in programming knows that if you're working on a problem to avoid any and all indian content because they straight up own SEO by pumping out hundreds of copies of the same plagiarized code, mistakes included. there aren't even any attempts whatsoever to personalize or mask the plagiarism, they just copy paste literally everything and it's in such large quantities that whatever right answer written by a white guy out there might be multiple pages deep. maybe a silver lining is that indians are the ones preventing chatgpt from being more powerful, lmao? anyways I don't think these people have an ingenuity gene, they only know the yoink without the twist
At simple tasks with well-defined expected results, e.g. 'output a function that returns the Fibonacci sequence' etc. If you violate any of the conditions I mentioned, it fails in ways that are hard to detect (by those who don't already know enough code to write the code in the first place), and it doesn't know how to debug the code it outputs.
A couple of months ago, I asked phind to write a perl script to forward windows event logs to separate text files. Easy enough. It couldn't do it. I asked several different ways and it still could not give me code that would do it without some correction on my part.
I'm not proud: gpt-4o is a better coder that me. Often producing elegant & comparatively simple solutions.
The best thing though is that it has memorized the help files, and it does it in a second.
"Can you read in those three variables using argparse? Variable my_var should be able to have multiple copies on the command line. Limit other_var to the names of days of the week"
and, 1 second, it's done. Sweet. That just saved me 20 minutes (should be 5 minutes, but there would be some fuck up of mine or something)
For me: it's AWESOME. You better coders out there (like nearly everyone) maybe not so much. I don't know.
Andrew Torba, the CEO of Gab, said in an X post: "[Elon's] declaring war on us btw. Should go over well for him as it has for everyone else who has tried."
I'm a Linux hobbyist/user who struggles writing bash/python scripts for my own use and I've tried using chatgpt many times to assist with scripts or troubleshooting system. Without fail that shitty bot fails miserably every single time.
Find a book called Unix Shell Programming, revised edition by Kochan and Wood. ISBN 0-672-48448-X. Published by Hayden books. It is not specifically bash but it works and explains a lot of how text processing commands work.
That's debatable. Most of what it does is steal from other coding websites, stackoverflow, etc to shit out an answer. Usually with 80% accuracy. I've used some of the code but it more effective to goto the actual website and read the reasoning for why the code was written that way.

It's a disaster.

Sometimes it just loses its damn mind and goes completely rogue.
Overall it is a net positive for my educational usage.
