The Migration Wave That Brought the End of the Sumerians.
The Sumerians settled in Mesopotamia approximately 6,000 years ago and established a high civilization.
While the Sumerians were living comfortably and prosperously in the civilization they established, people from the tribe they called Akkads from Arabia began to flock to work in the Sumerian cities. Although some people opposed this, others turned a blind eye because they saw them as cheap labor and slaves.
Things changed within 150 years and the Akkads burned and destroyed the cities, killed the Sumerians and then seized power.
In the last days of the Sumerians, a wise man wrote the following on a clay tablet: "We didn't notice, we were too late, oh my God, these savages will destroy us all. God forgive us!"
And the Sumerian State collapsed, and the Akkads sat on top of the Sumerian civilization.

If you show this to any so-called progressive today their response would be something along the lines of: "Well that's what those insert some massively simplistic yet damning pejorative label here deserved."

Sumerians were polytheists, theyd likely reference a particular god by name, not some vague "God".

Most likely their god of choice would be the patron of their city, or one of the most relevant gods to the situation, or one of the most influential of the gods amongst all Sumerians (Enlil, Mardul, Enki, etc.)
