Good point. But I also wonder how much of that has to do with the significance of the holidays (beg. with harvest and ending near the solstice). On the one hand, we can ask why not just spread out the holidays (it seems like you could have a holiday every month right?). On the other hand, why do we have the tendency to do most of our celebrating in this single season, or to set these ones apart as the most important?

I think the changing relationship people today have with nature impacts things too. Holidays aren't exactly the same to us. We'd probably give a greater emphasis to the spring celebration than we do. But in the west, Jesus sort of pushed everything else spring-related out, and with the decline of Christianity, it has sort of left a space open in the spring. Note: for casual Christians, or cultural Christians, i.e., people who aren't religious devotees but recognize Christian significance, there is a tendency to put more emphasis on the winter holiday (the nativity) than on the spring (the resurrection). Why is that? I don't know.

But even irreligious folks seem to find more significance in our winter celebration than the spring. Maybe it has something to do with the commercialization of Christmas? Like, if they had managed to make spring about giving gifts in the same way, it would be just as popular? I'm rambling.
