I think it comes from Latin, but we got it via the French. Baby animal names and collective nouns are just fun aspects of English.

I agree. They're called terms of venary, originally used by animal hunters to describe their prey, described in thee 15th century "Book of St Albans". James Lipton wrote a book about this called "An Exaltation of Larks".
