It's funny you mention that. The whole reason the technology was refused in Tesla's time was because the power companies couldn't figure out a reliable way to meter the energy use so they could bill the end user.

First of all Nikola Tesla's power scheme was to transmit the power through the Earth not through the air. That's a common misconception. The reason the wine Cliff Tower had a mushroom top was because he wanted to prevent leakage of the electricity into the air. If he had wanted to leak it into the air he wouldn't have made a smooth top he would have made a sharp pointed one


Secondly you can't transmit enough meaningful power with a laser beam through the air. You might have more success with microwaves in the 1970s Gerard O'Neil said that if we put solar panels in space orbiting the Earth we could beam the power down via microwaves to Earth. But laser simply can't do it.
