When I was young I learned that only humans went to heaven. Animals don't have free will, they said. I went to the pastor, father Grayson, and he confirmed it. In my confusion, I don't remember what I stammered, but I do remember the pastors answer to it. He said: "The lord works in mysterious ways". My 2nd grade mind thought something along the lines of: "No way I ever want to go where there are no dogs, I'm out of this bullshit". I was already dubious when I'd heard the thief on the cross being accepted into heaven because his last action was to accept Christ (I'd run that past Father Grayson as well and he said "Yup", even the worst mass murderer gets into heaven if, at the last moment, he accepts Christ as his personal savior, but a awesome and moral person goes to hell if they don't accept christ) and my disbelief that God could be all powerful but let horrible things happen to little babies for do reason at all. And from that day on I was over the top checked out of Christianity.
