It's just another fad. What's actually extremely important especially with men is to keep your thighs strong. While I wouldn't recommend doing squats because they can be real hard on your knees you absolutely want to continue to do very targeted exercises to your thighs and buttocks such as jumping and stair climbing Etc because triggering those muscles in particular stimulates the continued production of testosterone for men.
