Yea, they had big help from iran , russia and Hezbollah/ Lebanese militias - but i think he was found wanting ever since he lost control of the oil fields to the kurds, he had nothing to offer back.

The Assad line was one of the last arab nationalists from ww1 times - he did well to last this long.

Couple of vids ive seen, he monumentally failed and fcked himself over after the last isis uprisings of mid 2010's, making huge strategical mistakes and revamps of his (experience) armed forces.

Along with major tribal support flipping overnight to HTS (rebranded isis), with likely ranking govt/ army members paid off.

Literally all his best trained units - moved way down south early this summer to basically patrol empty desert and sit along the border and watch isreal bomb gaza - along with the bulk of his most effective militias.

Then this attack occurs a day after israel agreed to a ceasefire and stop bombing the outskirts of syria with Assad (over supply of weapons through Syrian territory).
