Hydroponics update

Getting mixed results. Kale and green leaf lettuce took off and the wife has been picking off leaves for dinner salads.
Red leaf lettuce is barely growing, which is odd as the green took off really well.
Cilantro is growing but not well.
Basil didn't grow, so I switched those two pods to spinach and that seems to be doing well so far.

Cilantro tastes like soap to me.

Yeah, a few of use cannot eat that shit. It's genetic, of course.

[ - ] NeverHappened 1 point 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 11:35:00 ago (+1/-0)

I felt so validated when I learned about this later in life lol. It's been like this for me since I was a kid. My parents and all my siblings except one have no issues with it.
I've heard about the genetic aspect and that some people suggest the genes help you to deal with beg bugs or something weird like that. I don't know how you'd go about figuring that out but I'm just happy I'm not alone with my hatred of cilantro.

I need to switch to the tasty soap that you use!

[ - ] NeverHappened 1 point 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 11:37:42 ago (+1/-0)

Kek but in all seriousness it's horrible. If you ever had to bite soap for naughty language as a child then you'd know exactly how it feels. Clinging feeling that just persists more than a taste really. Glad you are able to enjoy cilantro tho!

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 12:18:17 ago (+1/-0)

But I went blind from soap poisoning!

[ - ] NeverHappened 1 point 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 12:21:12 ago (+1/-0)

Haha a real potty mouth, eh? I only got the soap once. That was more than enough. I remember it 3+ decades later!

I would grow kale in a separate unit. You can get food safe totes and put as many plugs in the lid as you want. Obviously less plants per sq/ft for something like kale.

You can get decent quality 4x4 cob grow boards with a driver built in for around $100-200 on Amazon or wherever. You could drive the air stones in 5-10 of those totes with a single air pump. Costs a lot less when you scale a bit.

Red leaf lettuce is barely growing, which is odd as the green took off really well.

Have you grown the red leaf before? Might not have enough light for that and basil.

Good to know kale can be aerogarden'd.

Appreciate the update! Soon I may be brave enough to try "not dirt".

this is all stuff we grow in the summer garden outdoors. have been growing the green and red leaf lettuce for years. not sure what the deal is, but at least we have some good things growing :)

BushChuck might have a point: may want to beef up the lighting arrangement.

If you want, a lumen meter will give you a decent measure of how much or little you need to add.

Lux of 10,000 is full sun daylight...some grow lights will only offer 20% of that.

I’ve never had good yield from kale. I’ve found that growing lettuce all in one works good because of similar heights. We have 2 Farm 12s

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 13:22:11 ago (+2/-0)

Kale tastes horrible, anyway. This was nature's way of protecting you from it's awfulness.

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:07:08 ago (+3/-0)

But bitches LOVE kale.

Augustine, I didn't know you were into Dro. Show us that good good you're growing in the basement. 😂

Hey, put it in the brownies it helps keep the kids quiet at night. 😁

Good job. Keep at it. It will all come together for you.

You gotta get tha cilantro under control that’s the best of the seasonings. If there’s one thing I love about Mexicans it’s I cilantro

[ - ] Bottled_Tears 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 13:41:53 ago (+1/-0)

Oh good, you made food for one week out of 12.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 14:40:28 ago (+3/-0)

That's how experiments work. You don't ramp up production until you perfect the process.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 13:19:25 ago (+1/-0)

Oh, you got one of those doodads.

Does the water get all gross and stinky?

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:16:51 ago (+3/-0)

I need to determine if I can get a fish ecosystem version.

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:26:04 ago (+2/-0)

That would be an efficient use of fish poop!

[ - ] AugustineOfHippo2 [op] 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:31:30 ago (+2/-0)

aquaponics is pretty cool, but i think it's a big investment to start.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 18:22:11 ago (+0/-0)

Here I'm hoping there's something in the "20-30 gallon tank" size.

If I can grow produce while our goldfish have a great time, I'd consizer that a pretty neat science experiment for the progeny.

[ - ] AugustineOfHippo2 [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 16:38:19 ago (+1/-0)

Not yet. It's pretty easy to drain and refill if it does though.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:56:02 ago (+1/-0)

Oooo pretty.

[ - ] MaryXmas 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:19:28 ago (+1/-0)

I have one of those things. The plants are all based on fertilizer and I don't think they are very rich in nutrients.

[ - ] namefagsrgay 4 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:23:14 ago (+4/-0)

With hydro you have absolute control over the nutrients. That's why people do it.

[ - ] MaryXmas 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:46:24 ago (+1/-0)

So what do you do? Or do you just use the juice that comes with it?

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 13:21:14 ago (+3/-0)

He pees in the reservoir.

[ - ] Peleg 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:49:49 ago (+2/-0)

Spit tobacco juice in it!

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:44:16 ago (+1/-0)

The plants are "based" on fertilizer?

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 13:20:52 ago (+2/-0)

They're super based, by plant standards.

[ - ] Peleg 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:50:50 ago (+1/-0)

Based and redseeded.

[ - ] Looneyskiproony 0 points 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 09:18:56 ago (+0/-0)

Ooooooo, you grew half a salad. Feed the world motherfucker.

[ - ] DitchPig 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 17:36:20 ago (+0/-0)

Dude. Get real grow lights if you want to play. What you are using is far too low power.

You want a 350W metal halide, on the cool side.

Then make a rubbermaid hydro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12IGoF2Rtr0

If you insist on LED tech, you need a lot more of it than you are using. My veg tent is LED, and I have ~300W of them in there.

Watts = food, or weed mostly in my case. I have a farm for the food growing, but i mostly keep my cannabis inside.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 18:24:19 ago (+0/-0)

What's the lux of your light?

[ - ] DitchPig 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 19:29:52 ago (+0/-0)

No idea.
