Now that's exercise. No assistance from that rod whatsoever. He was basically just in a tug of war without the use of his lower body.

It's actually an asshole move, though. On 99 other occasions, that rod would probably have snapped and left that fish hooked. I understand you can't anticipate a monster like that, but using a kiddie fishing rod is bullshit unless you and your niece are small pond fishing for bluegill. There's a reason a .410 is for squirrels, not deer - point being: the right equipment considers the creature's wellbeing, not just how funny it will be for you to try.

Minnesota Sturgeon rules:

During harvest time, you can keep one sturgeon per calendar year that is between 45–50 inches long or over 75 inches long. You must purchase a special fish management tag and immediately place it on the fish.

Harvest is July through September, all other times are catch and release.
