That was pretty good. He'd probably want to kill himself if he were alive today to see what we've become.

Republics are literally worse than democracies. The problems of democracies are well known and studied. The problems of republics are the same as democracies with some obfuscation to convince dumb people the same shit won't go down, plus a layer that guarantees corruption on top of it.

We live in a late stage republic. If you want to see what fruit a republic bears just look at America. All republics are banana republics. Some areas just have high enough caliber politicians to hide the corruption.

You should read Democracy: The God that Failed by Hans Herman Hoppe. The title says democracy but he is writing specifically about republican democracy and why as a social economy it is guaranteed to be ruled by immoral people who will do nothing with their power but extract wealth from you. Republics are just democracies that establish a parasitic political caste.

A better system is Lichtenstein. It combines direct democracy for 90% of everything at the local level. A small amount of republicanism at the federal level. And a monarchy to be able to veto anything if the other two parts produce bad results. Republicanism does solve some logistical issues at the cost of some possible corruption so if you keep the scale of the republican component really small then you get the benefits without the corruption getting out of hand. Each village is nearly autonomous and uses direct democracy. There is no political class at that level to extract value out of the system. The federal government has representative that handle things that individual villages can't handle at their scale (almost nothing) and know that if they did anything blatantly corrupt (like just give free money away to foreign countries) the king will just squash it, so they don't even bother.

The point is their system absolutely minimized the amount of power an elected office will ever see and so they don't have corruption. Republics vest all power in elected positions or in career government hires (maybe worse), so you see nothing but corruption. The US is 20% republic + 80% beurocracy (which republics breed) and so it sucks. Lichtenstein is 90% direct democracy + 10% republic + 100% beholden to monarch authority, so it's actually good.

You've got a banana if you can keep it, ma'am
