AE's handy guide for using apostrophes

submitted by Anus_Expander to whatever 7 monthsNov 8, 2024 14:44:34 ago (+4/-1)     (whatever)

When in doubt, just leave it out.

---most people use them wrongly, most of the time. Not just teepeeniggers, even White folks!

If you think a word MIGHT need an apostrophe, but you are uncertain, then it probably does not.

I'm weak on both apostrophe's and: Colons. Mainly it's the possessive form that's so mysterious.

------------------------------------------------

'possessive form'

AI Overview

A possessive form is a grammatical construction or word that indicates a relationship of possession or ownership. To form a possessive noun, you add an apostrophe and an "s" to the end of a noun:

Singular nouns
Add an apostrophe and an "s" to the end of the noun. For example, "Samantha's dogs".

Plural nouns that end in "s"
Add an apostrophe to the end of the noun. For example, "the students' papers".

Names ending in "s"
Add an apostrophe and an "s" to the end of the name, unless the possessive form is not pronounced with an extra "s". For example, "Thomas's job" but "Socrates' philosophy".

-----------------------------------

So if it sounds weird to add an extra s, then only use the apostrophe. Otherwise go full 's.

[Thomas' job] is correct. A word ending in S that is used possessively just gets an apostrophe at the end. Adding another s is just clutter. One CAN add the s, but why?

Your neighbor is named Smith. His family are called the Smiths. Their son is 'the Smiths' son'.

It has been argued for millenia. Thomas's is just stupid. Thomas' implies the extra s. I hate clutter.

If you're wanting to indicate possession, just saying "Thomas' job" makes 'job' sound more like his last name. It's effectively "Thomas Job". Without the possessive 's, the sentence makes no sense.

"Socrates' philosophy"

Your theory works when the name ends in 's' and the extra 's' doesn't get pronounced. I'm not quite sure why the difference in pronunciation though. Socrates's doesn't sound that weird.

Literati KNOW the apostrophe means it is pronounced Thomas's. Just look at it. The extra s is RETARDED.

I think the 's' should be there when it's pronounced, and not when it's not. We don't want to sound like Golem, but it should be explicit when it's called for.

You're not wrong, but..I hate clutter. Adding an s behind an s is clutter.

I understand contractions and posessive plurals.
