Portable file recovery suggestions?

submitted by AugustineOfHippo2 to Computers 7 monthsNov 4, 2024 13:04:09 ago (+5/-0)     (Computers)

Fat finger Augustine here deleted a folder that I would like to get back. Most file recovery downloads seem really shady and sus. Anyone have a good no-install portable option suggestion?
Thanks

Solution:

Routinely back up important files on to a thumb drive, or other media. Do it often if you make large changes in important files, and records. You can get a fairly large storage thumb drive for under $50.00.

It won't help you today, but it will 100% prevent this from happening in the future.

This is definitely the way to go. Prevention is way better than frantically browsing for solutions which could be very complicated or potentially harmful to your device. I've lost an entire PC before, couldn't recover anything, it was an awful feeling. Since then, I've been really serious about backups on physical devices as well as clouds. All of my computers could explode, and I would be able to recover EVERYTHING rather quickly.

I have a NAS, and backup stuff there, but this particular folder is just a small program I wrote that I could do without or rewrite so it's not a huge deal. Recovery would be more of a convenience, saving me the 5 or 6 hrs to rewrite.

You wipe your hard drive? Like with a cloth?

I am assuming you're on windows. I have used Recuva in the past with varying results. I think this one needs to be installed, but you can find an unofficial portable version online. Make sure you have another storage device available and copy the recovered files to it.

I used USB 3.0 to SATA&IDE Hard Drive Converter

I recovered some music I accidentally deleted and I used it when one of my hard drives died. I went into the hard drive and retrieved almost everything.

Look up a program called File Scavenger from QueTek Consulting.

It will scrape everything out of the partition that hasn't been overwrote.

Going of memory here, I've used "active file recovery" before. If I remember right, it can be run from a thumb drive. Should be able to torrent it. Problem you are facing right now is that anything you save on the same hard drive has the potential to overwrite whatever you accidently deleted.

Take it to a repair shop

I outright paid for software some years back.

Had a gay old time going through old family hard drives. Managed to recover a handful of relics. Shared the license key with a few close buddies.

Ideally, I’ll never use a desktop computer or Windows operating system ever again.(outside of a professional setting)

Have you "shown hidden files"? and looked for them?
